Ascent

Ascent is a refined execution of what we’ve learned works. Built on a 2024 Mercedes Sprinter AWD chassis in Stone Grey with just 3,300 miles. This van served as our show and field test model before finding its permanent home.

The interior centers around durability and function. Walnut cabinet accents paired with Formica cabinetry create a space that looks intentional without sacrificing toughness. The Flare bed system provides 78″ of extended sleeping depth – enough room to sleep sideways comfortably – while preserving full access to the rear cargo bay. This isn’t a compromise; it’s deliberate design that comes from understanding how people actually use these vans.

The kitchen is straightforward: walnut countertop with continuous grain sink cover, undermount sink with directional coil-spring faucet, and a two-burner induction cooktop. The 90-quart high-efficiency stainless refrigerator is sized for extended trips, not weekend camping. Heated water throughout means cooking and cleaning work the way they should, whether you’re parked at a trailhead in November or camped in the desert in July.

Climate control uses components we trust. Espar diesel heater integrated with the van’s fuel system for heat, Nomadic Cooling 12V air conditioner for cooling, Thinsulate and natural wool insulation to keep both working efficiently. Three-zone LED lighting with dimmers and bedside reading lights let you adjust the space from workspace to wind-down. Strategic window placement – driver, passenger, and rear doors all with awning vents – creates airflow that actually works.

The 660Ah Victron Smart Lithium system paired with 520W solar and a 3000W inverter handles serious off-grid time. We’ve run similar setups for weeks without needing shore power or alternator charging, but both are there when conditions demand them. The 20-gallon fresh and grey water capacity gives you realistic autonomy between fill-ups and dumps.

Storage is designed around real gear. Massive rear storage drawers and an open cargo bay accommodate bikes, skis, climbing equipment – the stuff that justifies owning a van like this. The upholstered seating area with flip-up table provides functional workspace or a place to sit and eat without feeling cramped. A composting toilet stays out of sight until you need it.

Outside, Ascent carries what matters: Vertical Vans modular roof rack with LED light bar, Fiamma awning for shade and weather protection, Owl Vans ladder and tire carrier, bike rack and cargo box. Black Rhino Arsenal wheels on BFG KO2 A/T tires handle deteriorating forest roads and winter access. The rear outdoor shower with heated water adds convenience that extends your time between campground stops.

Mercedes’ factory equipment makes the driving experience comfortable: heated power swivel seats, 360° parking cameras, DISTRONIC cruise control, lane assist. The AWD system gets you places 2WD vans turn around.

This is what nearly 50 builds of refinement looks like – not the first attempt at a layout, but the result of continuous testing and adjustment based on how these vans actually perform when you’re traveling in them.
